Sociocracy

Sociocracy is a consent (not consensus) based governance approach. Gerard Endenburg, who developed sociocracy, came up with four main guiding principles to form sociocratic organizations:

  • Governance by concent
  • Circle organization
  • Double linking
  • Elections by consent

There are some additional agreements besides the four main principles:

  • No secrets may be kept
  • Everything is open to discussion
  • Everyone has a right to be part of a decision that affects them
  • Every decision may be reexamined at any time

I find the circle organizational approach interesting because it seems to fit very well with the Large Group Methods I have mentioned in a previous post. I find it particularly interesting that the circles are coupled through double linking, which means that at least two persons from the circle also belong to the next higher circle.
