StreamMode vs. StateMode

Mike Caulfield writes about StreamMode vs. StateMode in this article about What Iterative Writing Looks Like (and why it’s important). In StreamMode you organize your thoughts in a timeline or sequence of events. Twitter is an example. In StateMode there’s a body of work at any given moment. It’s not a trail of the path but where we are now. An example is the wiki. Bill Seitz writes in Why Use a Wiki for Your Notebook that a wiki gives you the best chance to refine and connect your thoughts over time. My blog is in StreamMode, but I occasionally go back and edit my posts. My current book project on Leanpub is in StateMode. This is where I work on weaving my thoughts into an an interwoven whole.
