Mark Van Vugt lists seven steps to become a despot:

1. Nepotism and corruption
2. Provide public goods
3. Monopoly on use of force
4. Exterminate rivals
5. Defeat a common enemy
6. Manipulate the hearts and minds of followers
7. Create an ideology to justify your position
